For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology
FIRST stands for, ‘For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology’. It’s an organization that was founded in 1989 in order to foster a love of science, learning, and technology in young adults. It inspires to build in these teenagers self-confidence, motivation, and most of all, a love of learning this innovation and technology that will build and shape our future.
It means more than that, however, FIRST also means a lot to those who are helping to create a love and inspiration in these young people. The mentors get to watch their work in action, they get to pass on knowledge and expertise to the next generation. As well as being able to be proud of the teens who are doing this work with their help.
‘What does FIRST mean to you?’ This is a question that we asked the students on our FIRST team. From that we got responses ranging from ‘Robots’ to ‘Expanding my creativity and skill-base’. From the funny, to the serious. But all of our team’s responses had a couple of common themes. Making friends, learning, and being part of a team. From beneath the acronym, that’s what FIRST really means.
